During the lockdown, I got back in touch with an old friend of mine Annalise. We both grew up in Plymouth and used to go to gigs together in the late 1980’s. I was most impressed when she produced a large selection of photographs that she had taken around that time and I’m now inContinue reading “The Early Years – West Country Gigs of Old (Part 1)”
So the Severn Valley Railway (SVR) announce a series of Diesel Running Days during September to create some much needed revenue during this difficult year. As there’s been no gigs and nearly all social events cancelled, this looked like a great day out and good excuse to meet up with old friends, drink cider/ aleContinue reading “Severn Valley Railway (Diesel Running Day)”
To say that this year has been disorientating is an understatement of some size. It’s been like finding out that Black Country glam rockers Slade used to cover The Lovin’ Spoonful’s ‘Darling Be Home Soon’ live in concert, thereby forever ruining one of John Sebastian’s greatest songs for the rest of your life. Then wakingContinue reading “Into The Valley”
It’s early August and my friend Mike has invited me up to Mountsorrel for the weekend. He has provided a tent in his garden for the night, which will be my accommodation and we are blessed with fine weather. So a walk along the river, followed by a few beers in the pub and thenContinue reading “Mountsorrel – a walk along the River Soar”
A walk along the Sea Wall at Dawlish. I must have made the journey along the Dawlish Sea Wall hundreds of times on the train and it’s one of the most scenic rail routes in the UK. The railway follows the coastline and hugs the sea from Teignmouth to Powerham as the train races along.Continue reading “Oh, I do love to be beside the Seaside (Devon … Glorious Devon!)”
Mclusky and Bilge Pump at The Parish Huddersfield, also Dark Arts Music Festival at Leeds Belgrave Music Hall.
A trip to West Yorkshire… February 2020. Norm contacted me back in 2019 and mentioned that the mighty “Bilge Pump” (one of Leeds finest guitar noise bands currently kicking around … and once described by the NME as “unlistenable guff”) were playing a gig in Huddersfield supporting Mclusky (A heritage 3 piece Welsh hardcore band).Continue reading “Mclusky and Bilge Pump at The Parish Huddersfield, also Dark Arts Music Festival at Leeds Belgrave Music Hall.”
‘West Country …. Tra La La ‘ 1989 / 1990 was a interesting period in my life, I had a crap job working for the Civil Service in Plymouth (Back in the DHSS!) doing a job that was soul destroying and poorly paid. However, I was working with some lovely people and we had aContinue reading “Thrilled Skinny and all that Jazz …”
The Temporary Return of Prolapse I can no longer remember for sure where I first heard Prolapse. It was almost certainly on a mixtape supplied to me by Wibble sometime in the mid 1990s, and it was almost certainly the single ‘TCR’ that jumped out and grabbed me. I soon had a copy of thirdContinue reading “Strain Contortion Of Bag”
Support from METZ and Giant Swan Idles I’ve been a fan of Idles since hearing “Well Done” on Radio 6 Music back in 2017. I first saw them at Colchester Arts Centre, a old church converted to a music venue with about 300 people in the audience. This was just before their debut LP “Brutalism”Continue reading “IDLES at Alexandra Palace, London 7-12-2019”
So here’s a blast from the past and a gig with a difference. Back in the late 80’s I was living in Plymouth and my local Pub was the Minerva on Looe Street. The Minerva was a great little pub and the oldest pub in Plymouth (It dates from 1540 AD apparently!) It’s situated onContinue reading “The Family Cat Boat Trip ~ 11th June 1993”
